Can I restore a Mac from backup (Time Machine) if the backup files are running Mavericks and the Mac I want to restore is running Mountain Lion?

Let's say I've got a computer running Mavericks and I buy a new one running Mountain Lion. When I restore the new one from Time machine backup, will it work? 😕

Worse case scenario is that you'll end up with Mavericks on your new machine. From there, you can downgrade to OS X Mountain Lion from the developer center (where you got the Mavericks download from developer.apple.com)
