Time Machine and MBA?

Does Time machine work via airport now? I know it had issues before.
If not, then how do you do your backups, using USB cable?

You can use time machine via airport with a time capsule or an airport extreme with an external drive hooked up to the USB port.

does time machine need to go through either time capsule or an airport extreme? can it be used on any NAS drive without either of the above?
