I couldn't even think how to search for this answer, so I'm hoping someone can just give me a quick answer if it's already been asked before.

My question is, is there any negative effects to storing files on a Time Machine drive outside the "Backups.backupdb" folder? Will they stay untouched and not effect the TM backups in any way (other than taking up available space)?

Time Machine will only backup to the Time Machine folder. So you are safe to put other files on the drive without fear of them being overwritten.
