Hello,

I have a 500 gb external hard drive I want to partition into two parts, one for my Time Machine backup, and one for some general file backup I keep on an older hard drive.

My problem is, I already have had my Time Machine running since I bought my Macbook.

So my question is, can I partition the 500 gb hard drive like I want and keep my Time Machine data? If not, is there a way for my to transfer my Time Machine data to my old hard drive and transfer it back after I partition the 500 gb hard drive?

Thanks in advance for the help.

well honestly I think simplest way would be this

reformat yor 500GB external, and after reformatting set the partition.

Then just run the itme machine again, (it'll back everything u previously had back up all over again)

and there ya go...

simply use disk utility to partition your external hard drive. the backup files won't be erased.
that is what i did
