Is it a coincidence that after installing Sequoia 15 Time Machine no longer works? TM says backup disk is not available and it isn't in finder. But it is "seeable" in Sensei and in Disk Utility, although the TM volume in DU is greyed out and says Not Mounted. When I click on Mount... nothing happens and when I try and run First Aid it goes for awhile, but nothing happens.

TM working fine here on Sequoia. Could just be a coincidence your drive decided to die now.

OP could also try a restart or shut down, disconnect TM enclosure cable, startup again, reconnect TM cable.
Else, could be drive- not enclosure... or vice-versa. But that's quite a coincidence.
If this was a Sequoia thing- and it could still be- I would expect MANY comments/threads about this happening to many others... even so soon after the Sequoia release.

Thanks for the suggestions. When I do get the volume to mount, I can actaully see all of my backups in Finder … I can go down to the lowest folder levels and in restore from backup I can see my earliest backup, but can’t open it. I think the problem is that my SSD is full. I try to manually delete my 2022 backups, but can’t. I don’t have the right permissions even though it’s my MacBook. I tried a terminal solution with no success.
My Time Machine stopped being able to backup right after I installed Sequoia. I had just done a manual run right before installing Sequoia so I know it was working fine right before. I had to just reformat the whole drive and start all over again and now it's working fine. Go Figure!
I had quite some TM issues again, since updating to Sequoia:
- backups were not finished (I GUESS it might be related to sleep mode of my macbook)
- backup is now corrupted, unmountable (!); solved by bringing back a snapshot of before sequoia, saving that one, and starting...
- ...a complete new backup...
- ...and still got "could not finish because some files are not available (????)"
All in all, this is very sad; I am using Synology NAS for backup, and the combo is working flawlessly for months, then suddenly this happens. Can't be coincidence; worst is a corrupted, unmountable image. no go. not good.
Fortunately I had my time machine folder snapshotted!
No solution so far.
p.s. It would be really helpful if Apple had a better diagnosis tool for TM; I know how to view the logs, but they spit out so much information, it's hard to identify the culprit.

same result here: It says it cannot finish the backup due to "unavailable" files when macbook is locked.
I seemed to have lost all abilty to summon old backups. I had to delete the files and start a fresh backup. Using a QNAP...
I've been having a lot of Time Machine backups randomly quit before they're complete. I have mine set to 1x/day, and often I'll look and see it's been multiple days between backups. If I manually initiate one, sometimes it works and sometimes it just quietly fails as well. It IS able to complete backups, but just not consistently. I will also see a message about how the drive was "unavailable" like others in this thread.
I'm just backing up to a plain vanilla portable HDD plugged in via USB, no hub or anything.

You mean you removed the drive from Time Machine and then added it again? If so, did you lose your old backups and have to start fresh?

After some analysis I think I got to the root of the problem, at least for me:
I tried everything before, even new backups an a new NAS where failing after a couple of minutes.
Now obviously the internal firewall dropped the SMB connection sporadically, which caused all the troubles and took me hours to get to (I have an issues with my tb4 dock as well at the same time, so it was quite a journey).
Solution now (for me):
- turn off internal fw
- start backup
- after couple of minutes, I switched fw back on (maybe should skip this one until first backup is done...)
right now, it's at 26GB of 1,1TB, running fine OTA.
edit: it stopped again, BUT after disabling the fw again it seems to run smoothly again...
update: still running, even with (macbook pro 2021) lid closed, on battery.
Maybe (!) it's a fw issues as well when going to sleep mode, as this might change something in the fw settings we dont see.

If the firewall is indeed the culprit, I would suggest disabling it for Time Machine, specifically, and not turning it off completely.
