I backed up my 256 gb SSD in my MBP, and when I connected the external hard drive to my iMac, it's asking password to access the time machine. I don't need the time machine now, but when I do need it, I don't recall setting a password for time machine.

I hope I'm not locked out of the time machine?

You probably opted for encrypted time machine backups when you set it up. If you don't know the password, you are SOL, you will have to make new backups. Same thing happened to me before, had to remake all my backups.

Fortunately I haven't erased the internal drive that I backed up, so I'll just be backing it up once more.
