I plugged in a new hard drive, configured it with Time Machine and began the initial transfer. It backed up regularly, every hour, until about 12 hours later when it suddenly skipped 5 hours. Then it backed up once more before just stopping to back up. After the last backup (which was at 6:14) the preferences panel showed that the next one was due at 8:14. Why had it skipped two hours? At 8:14, it never backed up! Instead, the time for the next backup was moved ahead to 9:14. The computer wasn't turned off throughout any of this. I am running an iMac on Snow Leopard. Never tried backing up before then so I don't know if Time Machine would've worked on OS X 10.5 at all. If you have any ideas of why this happened and how it can be corrected, please let me know! Thanks!
Just as a side note, I was reading the support section called Mac 101: Time Machine - and I saw a screenshot of their Time Machine preferences settings and noticed that theirs wasn't either set up hourly. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
