Time Machine Backup Issues

When I try and run a backup with Time Machine I get the following error.

Where are you trying to backup to? A network disk? An external drive? How is it formatted? FAT or HFS+?

try manually backing up from the Time Machine menu in the Menu Bar.

Thank you both for your reply. I have solved my problem. I found the solution at this web page. http://www.kremalicious.com/2008/06/ubuntu-as-mac-file-server-and-time-machine-volume/ I am running an Ubuntu box with an AFP share. I created the backup file on my local machine and then moved it onto my share. Worked like a charm.
