Time Machine backup process

Hey guys,
I have TimeMachine backing up on an external HDD for my 256GB MBA. Currently it's doing a backup and the drive shows about 40gb of free space left Will TM eventually begin to delete old backups as it adds newer recent ones to the drive or do I have to go in and manually delete backups from the past to free up space?

Yes, it will begin deleting the oldest backups first to make room for the new ones,
