Time Machine - backup volume can not be found.

I reinstalled OS X after a bungled upgrade to 10.5.3, but now Time Machine won't work. I get the error: The backup volume can not be found. I've tried formatting the drive and setting Time Machine up again, but no go.

Anyone had this before? Google seems to come up with people having the problem but no fix !
