Hello, I have searched different newsgroups and even the searched the internet
but I have not found an answer to this question.

Can you encrypt Time Machine backups without using File Vault, As far as I know Time Machine encryption requires File Vault to be switched on. If this happens it will start encrypting my computer which I don't want I just want to make a backup in Time Machine without having to worry about going near file vault.
    Has anybody done this?

Yes. I do this with my rMBP. I have a small USB3 powered external that I periodically back up (encrypted) with Time Machine. For my purposes I have chosen not to conduct a backup except when I specifically choose to do so.

Two completely separate things. You can turn on TM encryption without Filevault on with no problems.
