I have a time machine backup of my OSX El Capitan. I am having problems with signing into iCloud, but I've noticed if I go to Mavericks, which is the original OSX on my MBP it's ok. Can I put a Time Machine back up on El Capitan on Mavericks without putting the OS on or must I reload the programs I had on it before? If I can use time machine without OSX El Capitan, how is it done, please?

You can. When in Mavericks, open Migration Assistant and follow the prompts to restore from the Time Machine backup. It won't transfer over the El Cap system itself.

Thank for that
I tried but unfortunately it didn't work. Whether the stuff had updates for El Capitan I don't know but as soon as I connected my Hard Drive and got it to look for it I got a Mac showing with a yellow triangle, never mind . Thanks for suggestion
