ok i have a mac mini and a macbook can i hook a firewire drive to my mac mini partition it in half and wireless use the drive as a time machine on my macbook or is this a shot in the dark any info would help i just dont see myself being able to afford a time capsule i would love one but ya know

Sorry, but Apple doesn't support backing up using TM to network disks (unless it is to an Xserve, Xserve RAID, or Time Capsule I believe). There is a third-party app that will let you hook up your external HDD to a USB port on your router. Mind you, there are still some pretty big gaps in this.

I wouldn't recommend it. If you can afford a Time Capsule, you should get a separate external HDD for each computer.
