Time Machine backups - backwards compatible with Mountain Lion?

Just replying to a post about backups, and this suddenly dawned on me. I currently have not backed up with TM on Mavericks, my last one was with Mountain Lion.

Has anyone tried to restore a Mavericks TM to ML?

I just went to run a new backup in 10.9 and it's acting as if i've never backed up before...i'm a but curious as to what happens with the old backups. i haven't gone through with a backup in 10.9 yet. Gonna wait to hear what people are saying
