Time Machine backup

http://www.apple.com/macosx/what-is-macosx/time-machine.html

If I read this correctly if I open TM with my external drive attached the file that I see are ONLY those on external drive. If I open TM when the external drive is not connected I am only see the files awaiting backup to the external drive the next time it is connected. Furthermore when the external drive is attached the backup is done automatically in the background.

Is this the correct understanding please?

Correct, you see a view of your backed up data as it was hours to weeks to months ago.

I'd expect it to say "waiting to do a backup" but I've never tried. I dont see how it can show you any backed up files as they are on a disconnected drive.

Furthermore when the external drive is attached the backup is done automatically in the background.
Correct, once an hour.
