Does anyone know if you can continue the backup in Time Machine with another drive once you old drive is full?

In other words, my current drive is full and I do not want to delete old files from what were backed up but wanted to continue the backup onto a new drive w/o having to backup everything again on the new drive.

The recommended size of your backup volume is at least 2X the size of the drive(s) being backed up for a reason.

Besides, having your backup spanned across two drives doubles the chance that a hardware issue will bork your backup.

  • Don't skimp on your backup drives.
  • Get big, capacious ones from a reliable brand.
  • Have at least two and rotate them; store them physically apart.
  • Keep your most valuable files and current work in a free Dropbox account (get one at http://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTQ3NzczNjk and I get a space bonus :) ). (Think of the folks in San Bruno whose homes spontaneously incinerated yesterday.)
  • Check backups for integrity now and then, too.

If you go slightly crazy about backing up, welcome to the club, it's a good habit that will save you someday. It's a matter of when not if.

Good luck!
