I got this message when plugging in my external HD.
I've backed up once before, and everything went smoothly. Now I plugged my external again, and i'm getting this error message:
"The backup volume could not be mounted."

And, the "Next Backup" just has "--", and no time scheduled. Is there anything I can do to fix this and to start another backup? Thanks.

Time Machine error "backup volume could not be mounted" suddenly disappears

After three or four days of using the Time Machine on my MacBook I received the above error. I did not find any documentation or help on how to handle this error.

After about six hours I plugged in the laptop and connected my external drive and to my surprise the error disappeared.

    Very strange.

I wish Apple would document better such a delicate and important tool as the Time Machine!

By the way, I also discovered that /var/log/syslog has information on the activity of Time Machine.

Try telling Time Machine to begin a backup now.
