Time Machine error

I've had an error come up that says something along the lines of "Time machine error - could not complete back up". When I then manually back up, all seems OK. Since then it appears to have continued to automatically back up without any further issues. Is there potential disaster in the air. Got a 320Gb iMac backing up to a G-Drive 500Gb Firewire disk.

There is 225Gb free on the external disk.
