I am about to get a new Macbook Pro as soon as the 13" model gets refreshed, this will replace my 4 year old iMac. I want to start off with a fairly clean system and not boot from a time machine backup that is going to have a lot of crap on it.

The only things that I want to save are my iTunes media, my iPhoto pics ,my Address Book, and my iCal. Other than that, I want a clean system.

The problem with Time Machine is that I can only tell it what to exclude from my backups...and I don't know what to exclude while still keeping those 4 items backed up.

Can anyone help in telling me what directories I need to back up for these 4 items and I will exclude absolutely everything else?

Or if anyone knows any other tips here, it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Locate where you keep your iTunes folder... mine is in /users/xlii/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music

When you go to do the restore you enter time machine and click on the folder you want to restore. In my example above I would click on /users/xlii/Music/iTunes, and then I would click on restore.

So buy your new machine set up your user account (should be the same name as your old account for the above example to work). Then do the above in time machine.

DUH! Thanks for your help, it has been so long since I have restored I forgot completely about that.
