time machine not restoring

i just put a new hard drive in and reinstalled mac osx. when i tried to back up from a time machine back up it didnt put any of my contacts, book marks or anything back in. further more, i only have 120 gigs of my 320 gigs free. any help or suggestions would be really helpful. i need those contacts for work. thank you
 
Sorry to hear that but exactly how did you "restore" from your TimeMachine backup? Did you point to it as a restore site when you were doing the installation? or at a later time and again exactly how?
