Hi all

sometime back my backups stopped working. The drive I am using is a western digital. The drive appears to be fine as I can hear it spinning but t seems like the mac isn't recognizing that it is there.

I tried unplugging it for some time, IRC I think I did overnight, but that has not helped.

Any ideas anyone please ?

many thanks in advance.

Mike

Did you perhaps turn off the ext drive or disconnect the cable without first ejecting the Icon on the screen? Look under the apple menu>about this mac> more info and see if the Time Machine appears. They are categorized according to the type of cable: such as USB, Firewire, etc.

no it does not :-(

Off to bed now will pick up further replies in the morning.

thanks to all thus far :)

Try using a different cable. And check to see that the USB port or Firewire port are clean. Blow them out with an air can or use a vacuum. Sometimes just plugging and unplugging a few will restore electrical contact.

I dont have a spare and I tried swapping a couple over - card reader where drive was and vice versa with no luck :-(

Any other ideas anyone ?

Thanks

Mike

Go to the Apple Menu>about this mac>more info and look on the left side of the window under the cable type: USB, Firewire,SATA etc. Click on the appropriate cable type and it will show what (if any) devices are connected.

If nothing shows, you need to suspect either the cable or the power in the Time Machine device. Or, the port itself could be dirty. Cleaning with Q-Tips and blasting with air can help.
