a few questions. The backup states original size of 73.8GB but then stopped around the 71GB mark and said calculating changes, I dont see where this 2gb has gone?

also, why does it say I have virtually the same number of files on my HDD as I do on my SSD? I dont have anything on there currently? Is it just a cumulative total and its saying 205288files from SSD + 1 from HDD?

For what it's worth, you might also try researching a fix via Western Digitals forums.

I noticed that the backup log entries in your previous post wern't time stamped. When I look at my logs in the 'Console' utility after filtering on backupd for the system.log log file I get something like.

Ok, things look to be ok for now and hopefully I've got away without a dud drive. Here's what has fixed it as far as I can see:

1. THE MAIN THING appears to be the disk utility and running the 'repair disk permissions' and 'repair disk' actions (in my case only the permissions option fixed anything, it's listed a few things where as reality disk simply said disk ok

2. Even with the repair permissions option there was still one ACL error that kelt showing up in the list on disk utility even though it kept saying it had repaired this. For this I used a program called ACLr8 which reset permissions (note for anyone who uses this, when it asks you to enter your password, it will appear as if nothing is being typed when in reality it is, so just type in and press enter. For me then it appeared to do nothing but I pressed ctrl+C to abort and then when I restarted the app and ran it again it didn't ask this time and jus repaired the ACR. since this ran, disk utility no longer shows any errors)

3. Finally, I don't know if this affected anything but it can't have been doing any good but when I opened system log I noticed that every ten seconds a program was trying to launch called akamai that I had noticed in my 'system settings' menu and wondered what it was. Apparently it is some sort of auto updater that must have come with a program I had installed on my MBP, and when I restored from a time machine back up, it had this program, but because I brought everything across EXCEPT apps, it kept trying to run something that wasnt in the applications directory. Luckily it was still on my MBP so I just copied and pasted the app from one apication folder to another and then clicked uninstall which removed all trace of this app so it no longer tries to boot even when I look in the system log. How you would get rid of this if you had no another way of getting the app (I.e I'd formatted my MBP) I'm not sure as you can't download it on it's own but you can always just try contacting the company:D

Hope this help anyone who comes across this thread in the future and once again, a big thank you to all that everyone has put into this thread. It's all very much appreciated, I will now continue to monitor my mac over next few weeks to see if anything seems to hint at a faulty SSD.

Footnote - in the time machine log it shows that I have the same number of files + 1 on HDD as SSD. this appears just to be a slight bug that happens with multiple drives and is nothing to worry about but it's also possible that the count is cumulative (I have nothing on my HDD)'which would be 1 file say nothing lol

thats good to hear, im hoping because it said it was fine when I tried to repair it that everything is good but the imac is backing up now so we shall see!

out of curiosity did you mac take a long time to boot from CD as my iMac did which I was kinda surprised at!

Cheers,

Tom

It will always take a long time to boot from optical media. Why are you concerned? How fast do you think a DVD can be read?

I have exactly the same problem (TM backups taking one hour to backup two GB or less).

Disk Utility reports nothing wrong, so I am running out of options. The rest (new iMac i7+SSD) works fantastically well.

I saw in the Apple Support Forums that if you are able to trigger the deep traversal (usually by repairing the SSD), the problem goes away. I am not able to do it for some reason.

Things I'll try on Monday include repairing all the involved disks and permissions again, reindexing Spotlight, reformat the backup disk, burn a DVD (just out of curiosity), cry out loud, and call Apple.

Let's cross fingers!

The only way I've been able to consistently trigger a deep traversal is by booting off my 2011 iMac's Install DVD followed by a normal restart.

I usually restart once the Mac has settled down and gotten in to the utilities area/desktop.

As a side note, depending on the amount of data on your drives the deep traversal might take a long time. Some report that it takes over an hour. Mine too about 20 minutes the first time then when I triggered the traversal for testing purposes it took under 5 minutes.

I've read about other ways of triggering the traversal, but I've not been able to get them to work.

Sure hope this helps you out!

Problem is, I already tried this and no traversal happened, deep or otherwise.

:-(

Thanks basher, anyway! I hope I can solve this but I smell a TM bug (or a rotten SSD).

Solved?

Apparently the problem went away.

What I did: repaired disk/permissions from SSD (from a DVD boot), repaired HDD disk, erased TM external harddisk, repaired external harddisk (just in case), boot from SSD.

First backup (full) took less than three hours (as expected), first and second incremental took about five minutes. Still should be a bit faster, but these times are totally acceptable (before, it took about one hour for each incremental).

The only suspicious thing was that the disk utility found some wrong permissions on the SSD. Everything else was OK.

So far I am happy, I will report again if the incremental backup times start growing again. Hopefully not.

Thanks to you all! Still very interested in what Apple has to say about this. I found many others with similar problems in other forums.

Regards from Barcelona.
