Time Machine Query

I'm contemplating upgrading to Mavericks from Mountain Lion and am wondering if I can use the same Time Machine? I want to save my old backups, so will I need a new external drive to back up mavericks or can they both go on the same drive and I can still go back to the Mountain Lion backups/restores if I don't get on with Mavericks?

You can just keep using the same backup. If you decide to restore just pick a restore date far enough back in time to before the Mavs update.
