I will be trading my MBP for an iMac and was wondering if Time Machine will be able to recognize all the files on the external hard drive since I will now be using it with an iMac and not a MBP? Basically, can I back everything up prior to trading my MBP and still access everything on the iMac simply by plugging in the external since I am not using a MBP anymore? Thanks!

If you backup everything to the hard drive using a software other then Time Machine, when you do decide to use TM with that external hard drive it will not harm the older files.

I have an external hard drive that i keep large files on, i used that hard drive as my time machine backup and all my old files are still there untouched.
