time machine question

Just wondering if you already have an external drive that you run time machine on, is it possible to buy a new (and bigger) drive and just transfer the old time machine stuff over? Has anyone tried this?

I believe that if you plug in both drives at the same time, then you should be able to manually copy the entire drive from one to the other, but I am not possible, someone who may have tried can probably give you a definite answer.
