WHen using time machine do I have to use a freshly formatted external drive or can I use one that has stuff already on it? Also if I do use one that has stuff already on it does it need to have the same amount of free space as the total amount of hard drive space on the internal? Thanks in advance

you can use any Mac OS Extended(Journaled) drive. It needs to have enough space to do one complete backup. Once the drive is full it will delete old back ups.

Yes, there can be other stuff on the disc as long as you have enough space to do a complete backup.
