Time Machine: restore a backup, then restore part of a later backup

I recently installed High Sierra on my computer. I then customized it a little more to my liking.

I would now like to run a Time Machine backup, even though very little has changed.

After that, I can be more comfortable being adventurous. (I will have the ability to go back to the earlier Time Machine snapshot.) Maybe Time Machine will even let me label a description of the current state. If not, I can probably have a notepad on an external drive with that information--date and description.

The only caveat is that I like the idea of going back to an earlier state for the settings but I like the user files being unaffected when I restore the backup. Do you think I can restore to, say a 6/6/2026 backup and then after that restore the Documents folder for 7/6/2026?

I would think you would be able to do that as time machine stores the state that your machine was in at the various times in the past. If you restore the 6/6/2026 backup that would then be your current state. Then you could select the Documents folder as you can select whatever part you wish to restore right down to individual files. You don't need to label the current state - you just get the time machine to back up your present state and note the date/time of that file for later reference.
