Hey all i damaged my 2016 macbook pro touch bar 15 inch laptop- alas, a wine spill that got in the vent.
I have a time machine backup of the computer and about to buy a new MBP14.
Obviously using the backup would be the quickest way to fire up a new computer but is there any other issues?
If i just dragged over all the data- photos, documents, music, etc and did fresh install of apps, would there be any advantages?

Fresh Install always gets better results. Just takes more time. If you want it for longevity just transfer your data and reinstall the apps.

I did a Time Machine restore for the first time in my life when I went from my M1 MacBook Air to my M1 Pro MacBook Pro. This is the first time I've ever done this--I usually start my Macs fresh every time. It took less than 20 minutes and even allowed me to "claim" my old Air backups and bring them into my Pro set. I can corroborate @ThailandToo's comment and say that my 16" model from work was a fresh setup and took far longer to get itself up and running.

I will also say though that both machines are running with no problems whatsover, so for me, it hasn't made much of a difference either way.

Have the backup ready BEFORE you unpack the new MBP.
Connect the backup BEFORE you "lift the lid" of the new MBP for the first time.
Then... go on from there.

REASON WHY:
You don't want a "new" account created on the new MBP and later run migration assistant. This could create conflicts with accounts and permissions.

Rather, you want to run SETUP assistant "right from the start", which will bring over the account(s) from your backup (and all related files).

The old OS gets "left behind".
