I have a PPC Mac Mini with Leopard. I have a 500GB Maxtor external USB HD attached to it that I have been using for Time Machine (a partition named "Backup"). Just bought a Macbook for the girlfriend and I am trying to put her TM backup on the Maxtor via Airport network. I can see the external drive partition (Backup) on her Macbook just fine in the Finder, and I went through the first TM backup with seemingly no problems. I chose the "Backup" partition as the TM drive, and it went on its merry way for 2 hours or so.
It created a file named "Mae's Macbook_001ec20cbf32.sparsebundle" on the "Backup" partition, but now the Macbook in TM preferences shows no previous backup, and it's not allowing me to use the "Backup" partition again. If I try to mount the sparse bundle, I get a "failed to mount" error message with the reason "Operation not supported on socket."
I have three questions. First, is it even possible to set up TM like I'm trying to do? I have a Airport Extreme Base Station, and I'm hoping for poor man's Time Capsule eventually, but I know it's not possible now. Is this the same type of thing?
Second, if it is possible, was I doing it correctly?
Last, if I was doing it correctly, what might be my problem?
Thanks in advance for any ideas
