It's been a while since my last backup worked.. and I've finally decided to do something about it.

When I try to back up.. after it says "preparing backup" for a couple of minutes.. I get this message:
    "Time Machine Error
The backup disk image could not be mounted."

I've tried a few things that people around the forum have been posting.. but nothing helps.. I'm happy to delete my whole backup and start from the beginning as a last resort if needed.. but I'll need instructions on how to do that too.

Somewhere in the forums someone said that typing this in terminal might find the problem:
    sudo grep backupd /var/log/system.log

But I've got no idea what all this means:

TM failed to mount backup volume

It appears Im having a similar problem, and hopefully one more user's woes may lend support to Apple resolving this issue. Im running 10.5.4 now and a week or so ago TM on my Time Capsule started failing. Here’s the latest log:

    9/18/08 10:47:39 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1873] Network volume mounted at: /Volumes/Time Capsule Disk-1

    Any ideas? Cheers!

Try a "repair disk" on the TC. If all else fails, reformat the TC and start over.

May as well throw in my two cents on this issue. I am backing up to an Iomega TB external harddrive. My backups were working fine until about a week ago. I am now spending every extra moment trying to figure out why TM refuses to back up... Here is my addition to the ever increasing logs that are circulating:

Sep 18 17:26:45 Steph /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[388]: Error 45 creating backup disk image
Sep 18 17:26:45 Steph /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[388]: Failed to create disk image
Sep 18 17:26:50 Steph /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[388]: Backup failed with error: 20
Sep 18 17:26:50 Steph /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[388]: Ejected Time Machine network volume.

This is after I have created (or tried to) a new back volume. I am hesitant to erase the entire drive as there are two other machines backing up to the TB successfully.

If anyone has any bright ideas or fixes it would be greatly appreciated.

    Error 109?

Anyone found a fix for this 'Error 109"? - I have had this problem backing up to a drive hanging off my Airport Extreme.

I can get my main iMac to back up using Time Machine but when I try and back up the other 2 MacBooks in our home it causes chaos! - all the sparsebundles cannot be 'accessed' and I end up losing all my Time Machine backups as the only solution I have found is to delete the sparsebundles and start again.
I am just using my iMac and it seems to be working fine but I really need to back up my MacBooks but am scared of what the consequences may be.
    :(

Error 109 Time Machine with Airport USB Hard drive

I am not sure if this is a real fix or is just working for me. I will pass this on. I deleted my old backup file. I set Time Machine to not backup when on battery power.

System Preferences - Time Machine - Options - uncheck Backup when on Battery power.

I had tried the fix file utility and it did not work. I did not reformat the hard drive. I have had no problems for several days. Setup is a WD 1TB Workbook on the Airport Extreme USB port with a Macbook Pro.

    Possible solution

    Hi guys,

I found a way to fix the corruption that causes the error and with the proper prevention measures I didn't get that damned "109" error again.
I posted a tutorial on how to fix it on the Apple support forum. Hope it helps you out as well! Here's a direct link

    Cheers and merry Xmas
