Time Machine

Has anyone else had problems with Time Machine. The first backup I tried said looking for Backup Disk for about 15 minutes, I then canceled it, and removed and reset the time machine disk in system preferences. Now it's been stuck on preparing Backup for the last 1 hour.
I have read nothing about Time Machine not working with APFS, I know we have to keep our Time Machines in HFS+

UPDATE: After 1hr 5 minutes, it's finally backing up. Over 20GB backup also. So so far it's the slowest part of the new macOS.

I'm able to select my NAS and back up to that successfully. It did sit there preparing backup for about 30 minutes before backing up 19GB.

Well, I am glad it is working at all. I was worried. The question is: how does it handle a restore?
