I noticed yesterday that the time on my iPhone 5s (iOS 9.0) is running about 13 seconds fast. The reason I noticed is that all my calendar and reminder alerts are happening 15 seconds sooner on my iPhone as compared to my iPad Air 2 (iOS 9.0). I checked the time on both against http://time.gov and the iPad's time is correct. The iPhone's time is not.
I did recently go overseas and was in areas where there was no cell signals, but I've been back for nearly a month.
I tried fixing this by doing the following:
1. Turned off Settings > General > Date & Time -> Set Automatically, change the time a few minutes and turned it back on.
2. Repeating step #1 with phone in airplane mode.
3. Repeating step #1 with WiFi only.
4. Repeating step #1 with cellular (AT&T) only (LTE)
5. Repeating step #1 with cellular (AT&T) only (4G)
6. Restarting the iPhone
7. Hard reseting iPhone
8. Reseting network settings (and repeating steps 1 through 5).
9. Removing the SIM card and repeating step #1.
10. Trying steps 1 through 3 at work (on a different cell tower)
If I set the time manually the seconds will change, but the moment I change it back to set automatically, the seconds are 13 seconds fast again. This is true even if the phone is in airplane mode, which makes no sense to me since from what I've read the time comes from the carrier, but if that was the case then there would be no way for the time to be set if the phone was in airplane mode or the SIM card was removed.
I had an old iPad 2 (cellular, AT&T) and iPhone 4s (AT&T) and both of them got the correct time when I turned them on, so obviously the correct time is coming from somewhere. I even updated the iPhone 4s to iOS 9.0 to see if iOS 9.0 is the problem, but that didn't make a difference.
I called Apple and they basically were clueless. They said that the discrepancy is because it takes time for the time to be sent out over WiFi. That would explain maybe a half second discrepency, not 13 seconds.
Anyone have any idea where the iPhone gets it's time from (when in airplane mode and not)? Any ideas how to get the phone to sync the correct time?
