price is another reason

i am looking to get a new mac pro too (although quad core iMac is tempting). The main reason I am waiting is because of the insane AUS prices (it's literally cheaper to buy a plane ticket, fly to the US, buy one there and ship it + taxes + duties to AUS!).
So the main reason to wait in Australia is that the new Mac Pro shipping in Feb (guess) will probably be cheaper than the current one (which was priced when the $AUS was much weaker than today).

I did in post #19.

ahh its because your never mentioned the actual guide I didn't notice

I did see that before posting the original thread.

I didn't know if there was any additional information (or group knowledge) beyond what's on that link.

Yes this is true. The buyers guide doesn't always talk about what future technology will be required before an upgrade will come down the pipes. Normally its pretty accurate though.

Get an iMac and sell it when the new Mac Pro arrives. Cheaper short term investment and the resale value should still be high then as it should still be the current model.

Interesting perspective, but I usually keep my machines for a number of years (hence my current Mac being a 2005), so short term flipping isn't something I'd be looking to do.

Plus, I have a great HP monitor and would be looking to drive a Cintiq.

your windows narrows!

we're now late November
by the time you made your choice we might be December

shipping takes some time too so when would you have your 2009 mac? mid or late December. with some bad luck January..

that's very close to *possible* update

perhaps you just can wait for the new goodies? if you absolutely need the machine for something specific than there is no argument to wait :p

I really think that only typical HTC users who always run the MP at full load for all cores will be able to justify an upgrade. For those users it will be a no brainer. Fifty % more computing capacity is massive and should immediately translate into respective time savings. This is particularly likely as the Gulftown IMC is now rumored to get an upgrade to 1600 MHz RAM and CPU clocks are likely to go up to 3,66 GHz. Hopefully Apple will not again waste the band width by fixing the memory multiplier to 8 as they did with Gainestown.

I think that hugodrax's remark is far off the line. The Sandy Bridge architecture will not be applicable to the MacPro before 2011. The 2010 update will be about the "Westmere" die shrink and in particular the 5600/3600 Xeon six core CPUs code named "Gulftown".
