Can you please elaborate further? Are you saying that Time Machine backups ARE password protected when you are using a directly connected hard drive? Because I have not seen this to be the case.

Personally I take care of this issue by encrypting anything on my hard drive then I don't want someone to see if my MBP were stolen. That way, the backups are encrypted as well.

Thanks for the advice.

I want to save the TM Backup in a user specific folder on the USB Drive which is attached to the AEBS.
That folder should only be able to be accessed by the user who knows the password.
Well, if I turn on the accounts in the AEBS preferences I am not able to perform a backup using this user folder.
Neither the drive nor the folder show up.
Time Capsule on the other hand does support this feature.

That is an interesting feature that I was not aware of.

I'm surprised no one is commenting on this. This is HUGE!!! The firmware for AEBS is what we've all been waiting for. So far after doing the firmware update, my Macbook is able to keep the Airdisk connected after sleeping and the Time Machine recognizes my Airdisk.
crossing my fingers that this will work later today when i try it out.

You're thinking of sparseimage files. Sparsebundles were developed to mitigate the very issue you've described. A sparsebundle may appear as a single file, but (just like Application bundles), it's actually a folder containing small portions of the overall image. A badly timed drop-out that cannot be recovered from will affect only the portion within the bundle currently being operated on. If corrupted, the portion is thrown out of the bundle and re-created.

A momentary interruption will not lead to the loss of all data.

I know the difference between ythe two. In fact when I discovered the new sparsebundles I thoght it was the solution of a)image corruption and b) data fragmentation and loss of space (famous "need to recover free space" routine).

However, doing my tests I found out that disconnecting wifi while doing a backup (i.e. you could have a kernel panic or the airport could freeze altogether) would cause the sparse bundle to get corrupted.

I haven't tried it again since these new updates came out but i will asap..

Terrible performance

I have a client who installed this update today. Now, everything is slow. It can't play audio because when it tries, it is slow and jerky, skipping frames. It doesn't matter what the audio source is. I cleaned the caches, including the user audio cache, using OnyX. I fixed permissions, verified the startup disk, and flashed the PRAM. It is still not any better. I suspect the new kernel to be at fault. Is anyone else having this problem? I'm about the restore the system from a Time Machine backup.

I got my 160GB external up and running with time machine. Got the drive partitioned in half, using one side for time machine and the other for file storage.

Glad to see Apple reinstated the feature it had advertised to consumers in the pre-release website advertisements. For me and many others, this was one of the most important features in the decision to buy Leopard.

Better late than never -- especially under the assumption that it was a quality control issue that delayed this feature.

For those who don't remember this feature being presented to consumers, I pity your memories. For those who took a hard line with the "features subject to change" policy, remember that this was a last minute drop. Would you also defend Apple's removal if Leopard had also shipped without these other features: Time Machine, Spaces, new Safari, new Security features, Boot Camp, or 200 of the other 300+ features that were advertised as new in Leopard?

Firmware 7.3.1 - AEBS - Confused

I have the "old" airport extreme base station....its NOT the flat square one..its the round one with only b/g ... NOT n support. I did the new airport updates...my base station firmware showes at 5.7 ... checking for new firmware shows nothing available?...is that right....is 7.3.1 only for the new flat square AEBS with "n" ????? Thanks

Why would you want to use finder when TM is able to track your backups and all subsequent additions.?

The reason why is I don't want other computers to view my backups. So I want them password protected. Any idea how I can do this?

Anyone having a problem mounting the disk automatically at the startup? I have to go in finder and open the directory every time I restart my MacBook Pro. I was going to put the directory into the startup items but I would get an error when I'm not connected to my AirPort. Help!

Never mind. Repairing disk permissions makes it work.

Why would you need the new version? I have both the new AirPort Extreme and the one you have and correct me if I'm wrong but the old one does not have any way to connect a hard disk to it. It can only connect a printer to its USB port.

Just in case you are not aware, the backup process will automatically mount and unmount the backup drive when it runs. You don't have to keep it mounted if you don't want to.

Hacks or no hacks, does anyone know if the Express can be used for TM?

Let us know after you update. I have the new build number as the other poster, and I have install all the updates (Safari, Security, TM).

I have the new build number

I have the new build number

I don't have an AirPort express but as far as I know there is no way to connect a USB hard drive to it and have it recognized. However, if you wanted to connect a NAS (Network hard drive) to it then you MIGHT be able to access it for Time Machine. I can't say for sure as I have never tried this myself.

Seems to have fixed the airport drop out issue

Hi

Over the last couple of weeks I have had to reset my airport base station twice because my macbook pro could not connect to my network. Since the latest update it does seem to be more stable - at this point anyway...

I got a Time Machine error today that it could not create the directory. When I tried to connect to the TC it requested a username and password, which is a problem I have seen discussed on the Apple forums. The TC previously locked up totally twice. I am taking it back today for a refund.

Have you tried holding the reset button down for 5 seconds so it can completely reset the password and settings? Isn't it a bit extreme to get a refund, if you feel it's defective why not ask for an exchange? Don't base your decisions on forum messages you read. People with good experiences hardly ever post and the good experiences always outweigh the bad ones.

Since I've already had 2 total lockups I don't want to mess with it. My Linksys has served me faithfully for years without any trouble, and this TC has 3 problems in a week. No thanks. I may give it another try later after the bugs are worked out. I can't put up with network issues.

Great. After some days of hope the "feature" of disconnecting my airport extreme inside of my macbook 2 ghz WPA2 starts again. Better than before. What an annoying situation. So you´re the lucky on till now.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I get MUCH better airport reception when I am far away from my airport extreme after the 7.3.1 update. Anyone else notice this?
