Ok so I know you are able to put partitions in a harddrive, so I was wondering if I could partition 50Gb or so of an iMac to be used for Timemachine? Is this a really dumb idea?

I wouldn't, because if the drive fails - so does your backup.

Defeats the purpose surely. The idea is that you have an external backup to fall back on if your Macintosh HD goes tits up.
