usb drive

No...Already tried that. I spent the entire 4th of July holiday weekend trying to build a workaround for this. There is none. The ONLY things you can use TM on are:

A local Hard Drive Formatted with A Mac File System
A Time Capsule
A AFP Share on a Lion or Snow Leopard system
A Linux Server running the newest versions of nettalk.

apparently a USB drive connected to an airport extreme will work as well. for those mac users with an airport extreme, you can just connect your NAS to that device for now

For the record ....

Netatalk 2.20 release is now up on Sourceforge.
I just checked about 10 minutes ago and no sign of FreeNAS 8 doing anything with this new code yet, but hopefully it's happening behind the scenes at least.

I just spent a lot of money building a big server running FreeNAS, v8.0 about a month ago, so all of the Macs in the house could do centralized Time Machine backups onto it -- and well, got screwed big-time with that plan!

Great news http://www.netafp.com/open-letter-to-the-netatalk-community-501/ Scroll down to the "update" section.
Netatalk 2.2 will probably be on sourceforge soon.

Unfortunately that was a fix for Windows machines, and how to create a sparsebundle.

I tried the second part (Prepare Your Mac!), as I'd already had it working before Lion and I think the 1st part was for a Windows machine. I'm backing up to Unbuntu via and SMB share. It worked for me after running the script and it's now happily backing up.
