So now that iH8sn0w has found a way to downgrade on A5 devices I want to know what I need to do. I think he said you need to save your SHSH blobs. I'm not very familiar with these since my 4S was the first device I jailbroke. What should I do to prepare for whenever the release this? I would like to restore to 5.1 then downgrade to 5.0.1 and start fresh. Is TU the only app I need or do I need other tools? I'm on a Mac and I tried running TU but I get this error

Save your hash files for every iDevice on every firmware level Apple releases

If TinyUmbrella shows a Java exception, try updating the Java on your computer.

It was working before and I saved the hash files for 5.0 and 5.0.1 (9A405 and 9A406). I'm not sure why it stopped working now. How do I update java?

Sadly, though, if you haven't already saved your 5.0.1 SHSH, it is too late now to get it from Apple. If you jailbroke early enough, Cydia may have your 5.0.1 SHSH on file, however. You can check at the top of the front page in Cydia.

If it were me, I would Google the Java update page

The older version of TinyUmbrella saved only the hash file and not the APTicket file
The updated version, saved both.

There are many who saved their 5.0.1 hashes early, then never re-saved with the APTicket, so many have only partial hashes.

Any idea how to check to see if you've got the APTicket?

On a mac, copy (not move!!!!) the shsh file (from the hidden directory .shsh) somewhere else, rename it from XXX.shsh to XXX.plist.gz, uncompress it (eg with gunzip) and open it. It will open in Xcode's property list editor. Check that there is an entry called APTicket.

So it worked when I plugged my phone in. Didn't have to do anything else. I can see the following blobs. What are apticket files and how do I check for them on a Mac? Do I need them for when I want to revert to a previous iOS version?

do post #8

How is it some skip over the contents of a thread and re-ask the same question that has been answered ?

Sorry I missed that. I downloaded redsn0w 0.96rc16 and it's asking me to pick the IPSW for my current firmware. Should I download the IPSW for 5.0.1 and select then pick next?

I recommend using a tutorial here

Pick the one for your phone model, firmware, baseband preservation (if needed) and computer type

There isn't anything for the 4S since the method hasn't been released yet.

Apparently you also missed that this new method to allow 4S, iPad2 and iPad3 restores is in development and has not been made public yet (Hint: reading comprehension X 2)

There has never been a method before to restore an A5 device to iOS5 firmware other than currently signed version

I assumed since you asked for instructions, you knew this will not currently work for a 4S

I am aware of that I am just asking what will I need based on existing methods for older devices. I already stated that this is my first jailbroken device so I'm not familiar with TU, how to use it and what I need for when the method is released. I know that no one knows the exact details.

What is needed is just what the others did.
5.0.1 hash file and APTicket having been previously saved which can be verified by Redsn0w in the manner I explained (Extras-SHSH-Query)

Then if it verifies complete, sit tight for the release.

Good luck !

I'm sorry to ask again but when I open Redsn0w it asks me to pick the IPSW for my current firmware. Should I download 5.0.1 and do that?

Redsn0w cannot do anything for a 4S, incompatible

How do I make sure TU has backed up the SHSH and apticket file? Can I use the method mentioned above?

Edit: I tried and the .plist file opened in text editor and when I searched for "apticket" I got this as the only entry found
