I almost always go naked with the phone. Only time is when I go camping when I add a case because I'm around a lot of mud. For that I use the Griffin Survivor. Never been let down yet.
I use these for camping

- I don't let go of it unless I'm setting it down (ie. I don't drop it). How many times in your life have you dropped your sandwich? A banana? Don't do it to your phone. Yes, this means when I'm holding my phone I'm very aware that I'm holding an expensive, fragile device. If I'm in a situation that could pose even a remote risk to my phone (busy crowd, etc), I consciously apply a firm grip or I pocket it.
I also go naked, but I have to admit - all my phones have scratches.
Not terrible, just a few here or there over the years. I'm thinking to get a transparent super thin sticker just for the back of the iP6+. On the hunt for one atm.
Modern phones are too sexy to cover up in crappy cheap silicon. And anyway, they're just phones at the end of the day.
Sorry, but if you are claiming you had the 3G and 3GS without any scratches on them whatsoever, I am not inclined to take you seriously. The backs of those phones scratched if you looked at them wrong.
The later phones have stood up much better.
I feel the biggest use of the case is when I have my phone in the car. I don't like the "GPS-like stand" on the windshield. I like to keep it in the cup holders and near the gear lever. Without a case, the phone will go to the dogs by the time I reach my home from the Apple Store.
I just don't understand how people say theirs are pristine after a year. I always use a case but am very careful with my phones and yet the case seems to be scratched and marked up to all hell after a year. I just find it hard to believe you can match the perfection that is when I take off my case and screen protector after a year. It always looks fresh out of box.
To be fair, I don't recollect the exact condition of my 3G, though I do know it was in pretty damned good shape when I gave it to my daughter. The 3GS was the one that went into the washing machine. As my daughter was using my previous 3G, and the 4 was 3 weeks away from coming out, I went back to my original phone until it was released. That was a looong 3 weeks.
I will agree, out of all the iPhone models, the 3G and the 3GS were the most 'toy' like in look and feel. I had them both in white which had a tendency to not show micro scratches nearly as much as the black.
Couple of other points: Mine are/have been naked, also, and usually get full trade in value. Mine live in a pocket with only a leather wallet; I use ProClip mounts for the car, which takes care of issues with bouncing/falling there. (Keeps it charged and usable underway also (at stop lights...)
Of course, AC+ is recommended if something does happen!![]()
My one tip for everyone going naked is buy AppleCare+ and don't worry about babying your phone otherwise you'll always be nervous/ unhappy about it being naked thus taking away some enjoyment of the phone.

Why don't people just get a thin case like the Caudabe Veil that LOOKS like your phone is naked, but at least still keeps it protected from scratches or shallow falls? I'm definitely inclined to go naked, but aluminum is a soft metal. Even keeping a thin layer of plastic over it will help.
Trust me your phone will get scratched even if it's alone in your pocket. Something magical called sands does this.
I will wear cover for my phone for a year then take it off later.
