Accidents happen. No one on purpose drops their iPhone. Being careful helps but it does not eliminate accidents.

Run a poll on whoever needed to replace an iphone because of an accident. Bet the results surprise you.

  • I don't let go of it unless I'm setting it down (ie. I don't drop it). How many times in your life have you dropped your sandwich? A banana? Don't do it to your phone. Yes, this means when I'm holding my phone I'm very aware that I'm holding an expensive, fragile device. If I'm in a situation that could pose even a remote risk to my phone (busy crowd, etc), I consciously apply a firm grip or I pocket it.

The thought behind this is good and while I use my devices naked the bulk of the time. Generally speaking, you're not walking while you're eating, or pulling the food out of your pocket, which is 9/10 what you're doing while you drop a device.

I opted for this case from amazon.

On an average day. Gym - use case, work - no case, home - no case, kids play or talking on phone - use case, vacation - use case, etc..

Just depends

I feel the biggest use of the case is when I have my phone in the car. I don't like the "GPS-like stand" on the windshield. I like to keep it in the cup holders and near the gear lever. Without a case, the phone will go to the dogs by the time I reach my home from the Apple Store.

I also go naked, but I have to admit - all my phones have scratches.

Not terrible, just a few here or there over the years. I'm thinking to get a transparent super thin sticker just for the back of the iP6+. On the hunt for one atm.

Modern phones are too sexy to cover up in crappy cheap silicon. And anyway, they're just phones at the end of the day.

If you find a good very think unnoticeable one, let me know. Hell, let's us know.

Sorry, but if you are claiming you had the 3G and 3GS without any scratches on them whatsoever, I am not inclined to take you seriously. The backs of those phones scratched if you looked at them wrong.

The later phones have stood up much better.

To be fair, I don't recollect the exact condition of my 3G, though I do know it was in pretty damned good shape when I gave it to my daughter. The 3GS was the one that went into the washing machine. :( As my daughter was using my previous 3G, and the 4 was 3 weeks away from coming out, I went back to my original phone until it was released. That was a looong 3 weeks. ;)

I will agree, out of all the iPhone models, the 3G and the 3GS were the most 'toy' like in look and feel. I had them both in white which had a tendency to not show micro scratches nearly as much as the black.

I have a small swatch of soft cotton that sits in one of the trays in the center console. My phone sits there.

Which reminds me... I have to check and see if a 6+ would fit in that spot or not.

Apple Care + for the WIN....Naked most of the time, usually no screen protector. If anything ever happens 79 bucks will get me a brand new phone.

I also have always had my phones naked with the one exception of using a slip case/pouch when it is away.
Whilst it is in my pocket (alone) it is also in a thin leather case. When I have it out and using it, it is totally naked.
I see no downside in having it a little protected in my pocket as I'm not holding it then so won't be annoyed by a stupid case.

Couple of other points: Mine are/have been naked, also, and usually get full trade in value. Mine live in a pocket with only a leather wallet; I use ProClip mounts for the car, which takes care of issues with bouncing/falling there. (Keeps it charged and usable underway also (at stop lights...)

Of course, AC+ is recommended if something does happen! :)

My one tip for everyone going naked is buy AppleCare+ and don't worry about babying your phone otherwise you'll always be nervous/ unhappy about it being naked thus taking away some enjoyment of the phone.

I just don't understand how people say theirs are pristine after a year. I always use a case but am very careful with my phones and yet the case seems to be scratched and marked up to all hell after a year. I just find it hard to believe you can match the perfection that is when I take off my case and screen protector after a year. It always looks fresh out of box.

I've actually found a lot of cases to be the cause of the scratches. No matter how much you try not to let it, dirt/dust gets in between the phone and the case and then that gritty dirt rubs up against your phone.

My old iPod Touch 4G (The chrome scratched like crazy) got messed up just being in a case. It only ever sat on the desk or in my pocket, yet when i took it out of the case on day it had several micro scratches.

I actually use an Oakley sunglasses carrying cloth/bag. Not the rigid kind, but rather the cloth bag style. It's super lightweight and allows me to clean the glass every so often.

Like the OP said, my iPhone are always in pristine condition even after a full year of abuse.

The iPhone slides in and out of the sack with ease. It easily fits in my pocket...when using the phone, the sack goes into my pocket. When sliding it into and out of my pocket, there is no chance of tiny particals scratching either side of the phone. When setting my iPhone down on any surface, I lay it on top of the case.

Another huge advantage is how easily the end of the bag is to grab with just two fingers. Very little chance of dropping it when holding the ends like this. Makes pulling out of a pocket really easy...phone comes out...case gets put aside...I enjoy the naked iPhone.

I've spent tons of money on all sorts of cases and this simple rag of a bag is the absolute best I've found.

Well, at least you're honest. My 4 hit the washing machine. Launch night...

Absolutely. I always get AppleCare+. Saved my bacon when my wife dented her phone and cracked the screen on her 5 (ironically, it was in a case).

Just don't get the ZAGG full body screen protector. I did on my original 5 and it ruined the back of my phone when I removed it. It was horrifying! I'll never buy one again!

Why don't people just get a thin case like the Caudabe Veil that LOOKS like your phone is naked, but at least still keeps it protected from scratches or shallow falls? I'm definitely inclined to go naked, but aluminum is a soft metal. Even keeping a thin layer of plastic over it will help.

Because I prefer feeling and interacting with the raw materials of the phone, not with a thin layer of plastic.

So, to that end, I take care of my phone, I get to enjoy the way the phone feels and keep it looking new at the same time. :)

This is going to sound a little weird but I have found that most of the time, when I drop my phone (which isn't very much) I am able to kick it a little before it hits the ground. By kick it, I don't mean like a goalie punt but rather just a little love tap from my foot before it hits the ground. This way the phone ends up hitting my soft leather shoe and only ends up falling a few inches rather than hitting the hard floor and falling a few feet.

Trust me your phone will get scratched even if it's alone in your pocket. Something magical called sands does this.

I will wear cover for my phone for a year then take it off later.

Why do you have sand in your pocket? Look at my pics. No sand scratching there.

People who say they don't have scratches on their phones just aren't looking hard enough. I've gone naked on my 5s for a little bit and, to the undiscerning eye, it looks pristine. But look carefully and you'll find hairline scratches on all sides and small chips.

The thing I'm most concerned about with these bigger phones is that they're even easier to drop just by virtue of being bigger. So going naked will be even tougher.
