I live in the US and will be traveling to Australia and New Zealand for about 3 weeks. I called AT&T to find out about using the phones in Australia and was told it would be about $30 extra per line (not including the $1.69 a minute charge).

I'm wondering, what would happen if I just took out my sim card, and used the phone like an iPod touch while I was over there. Would it work? Would they have any means of charging my phone account?

I'm thinking of just using the phone in places where free wifi is offered, and using the Skype app. Will that work ok? Or are there any other tips?

Take your SIM card out just in case. And if your phone is unlocked you can buy prepaid SIM cards almost everywhere in the world. A lot of airports sell them when you get in. This is what I do when I go to Manila.

Use it with WiFi and get a $30 pre-paid phone while you're here. Much cheaper than international roaming.
