French Laundry is $250 a person. I think this is a little bit too much, but very cool. You guys have really given me the hookup on the food. I'm a bit of a foodie, so it is appreciated.

What about shopping now. The kind of odd little shops that aren't in your average mall. No particular kind, just kind of the neat places that are cool just to browse.

Wow -- I have absolutely nothing to add! Someone even mentioned Bartholomew Park winery in Sonoma. Talk about a wealth of knowledge here!

Might be worth a brief trip to the Upper Haight. The neighborhood bears little resemblance to the Summer of Love days, but it's close to the enterance to Golden Gate Park and you absolutely must hit Amoeba Music: the best record store in America IMHO. Quantity *and* quality.

Do the burrito tour. Tacqueria Cancun (several locations), La Tacqueria (25th and Mission), El Toro (17th and Valencia). Order adventurously, though you needn't try the sesos on my account. :p Also plenty of good cheap Thai and Indian options seemingly everywhere. For a nicer dinner, check out Delfina (or just get some of their Neapolitian pizza next door), L'Osteria del Forno (one of my personal North Beach faves), or Alegrias for great Spanish food. Get coffee and fresh pastries at Tartine on Guerrero Street -- the huge line down the street lets you know that it's something special. The Pork Store Café in the Upper Haight makes a mean breakfast (haven't tried their bigger Mission outlet on 16th yet). Have a drink at the Top of the Mark, the Tonga Room (laugh at the cheesy disco band playing on that barge in the middle of the artificial rainstorm), or Nihon (aka Heaven if you love whiskey/scotch and good Japanese food). Walk through the Ferry Building and check the Farmer's Market and all the lovely gourmet food stalls/shops, buy something to go and eat overlooking the bay.

AVOID AVOID AVOID Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39. Total waste of time.

For non-mall shopping, I'd wander the Mission District (Valencia Street) and Hayes Valley (Hayes Street). There are a few good stores on Union Street in my 'hood, but you'll have to parse through a bunch of nauseating yuppies.

This looked like a not bad article
and this one

I lived in San Jose and Santa Cruz, so I definitely know the south peninsula better.

Oh, like Bucks in Woodside
Good food and lots of history

Levi's flagship store is there as well.

Have fun!

Don't go to Kan Zaman on Haight St. One time the belly dancer came out and when she lifted up her arms and she had like total hairy arm pits. Then when she started spinning around her dress knocked some coals off somebody's hookah and they landed all over this girl. True Story.

... My dad decided to take me on this circle tour instead, it was way cheaper and got right up close to Alcatraz and we went under the Golden Gate Bridge. Unless you have a lot of time, I would just take the circle tour...

i am visiting San Francisco right now, strangest city on the planet, but really neat. I'd that also 12hours ago in fact.

I think I'm an anomaly in the human race but i really enjoy the weather here. A 60 degree day cloudy bit windy and some mist/fog = absolute perfectness.
My hotel is a block and a half form the union square apple store. (I bought a airport extreme there and love it). I think it might have been said but ferry market completely owns fisherman's wharf.

I have a question about cupertino and apple HQ. Can I go in? Can I be, or my MBP be blessed by steve jobs? Do they have tours or something of the like?

Go in? Into the builidings? Maybe the front lobby. You could go into the Company Store, but they're not open on weekends. And no tours, not for the public at least (if you knew someone who worked there, they might be able to arrange something, but otherwise, you're outta luck).
