I agree that the world isn't perfect and that parents aren't too, but I think one of the posters is right in saying that the family should try to help together first. The father had problems, yes, but the older children should have tried to minimize the shortcomings of their father by being the new mothers.
But enough of that, I shouldn't judge/hypothesize since I don't know fully their circumstance.
A "safe-haven" law has its uses. Better for children to be given up to social services than be abandoned in the streets... or be sold as sex slaves... or be involved in mass parricide.
