Being you have a rMBP you will be extremely disappointed in the 27. The 23, you may be able to live with however at that point you might as well just save your money and use the macbook screen.

I think this is good advice. I understand the pixel density issues that would occur on a 27" display with only 1920x1080 resolution --- especially when I'm used to starting at the gorgeousness of the 13" Retina MBP display.

I don't know, perhaps I'll wait Apple out even longer to see how their display situation shakes out. Another option would be to sell the rMBP and get a 27" iMac and an iPad Air. Would be pricey even with the sale of the rMBP, but would solve my problem.

Do you NEED the big display? Personally I would not give up your retina macbook. Especially not when you can pick up a high quality 27" 1440P from dell for 600 new OR pick up a cheap "temp" 27" 1440P for around $300.

Apple is not done with making displays, they make the 27" iMac which... needs a decent display to bring in the 1700$ asking price.

My guess, Apple will offer a new TB display later on this year in two flavors, 4k and 1440P. Might even be a year until this is offered.

If Apple doesn't release a display when the Pros are actually in the stores, I think I'm going the monoprice route. i'll wait until CES as that's only a few weeks out. Monoprice uses the same IPS panel as used by the Apple TBD. It has a hole in the glass and a socket on the panel for the Apple webcam, so you're getting the same display for less than $400; and lets face it, as a hub, the current TBD is severely outdated anyway. It's 2560x1440, and the reviews are very high. Black metal frame and back; it would match a pro, or even the black keys on an apple laptop. It's a glossy display with an anti-glare coating that reviewers love. Color brilliance of a glossy, with anti glare of a matte. The stand sucks but it's VESA compliant and they sell a bunch of highly adjustable good quality stands for around $20. The biggest complaint besides the stand is the onscreen controls, it's too bright for dark rooms. Even with the optional VESA stand, and USB to dual link dvi dongle, it will come to less than $400 shipped. Same panel, good looking thinner enclosure, but much better adjustability without an outdated hub for less than half the price. I'll wait until CES just in case something new comes out, but I'll be happy with this if nothing new surfaces. Sorry Apple, but without an update, you're making my decision easy.

I finally got tired of waiting for apple to refresh the thunderbolt displa. i have a late 2013 macbook pro retina. Plugged in to the thunderbolt port i am really impressed with this monitor. the speakers arent the greatest but the display is truly gorgeous and comes extremely close to the clarity of the retina laptop screen. sorry apple, you lose, took too long...
i don't even mind the peripheral setup as i have a powered usb hub and just plug in the thunderbolt display, power cord and usb hub connector. Works perfect!!!! Would highly recommend. Almost half the price of the Thunderbolt display as well...nice savings and no tradeoffs with the display!
