Titanium to Aluminum

Hello all,

I currently have a Series 10 in Slate Titanium. I've always gotten the stainless steel/titanium models. I want to get the Series 12, but I'm considering the aluminum body for this model. One reason is that the trade-in value for the titanium is the same as the aluminum, which is always a shocker for me. You'd think the titanium would have a better value. Another reason for me is the weight of the watch, especially when I wear it for sleep tracking. It's a small thing, but I can feel it. And the price difference is a big factor, especially these days.

But I know I'm giving up the sapphire glass. I've probably hit my titanium watch on so many things, and there is not a scratch on the face. And I won't have the premium look and feel of titanium.

First world problem, I know.

Has anyone switched from titanium to aluminum? How was it? Did you stay on aluminum or did you go back to titanium?

I am considering the same thing, specifically because as per their specifications, the glass on the aluminium vs titanium models is same in this generation. Can someone confirm?

Sorry, it seems they both have Ceramic Shield 2, but only the titanium and ceramic cases have sapphire crystal display.

I won’t be downgrading to aluminium, because the regular glass looks absolutely horrible after scratches.

Sort of… I’ve had Aluminum watches (OG, S3, S6, S7) and then went to the U3 which is of course titanium by default. Now going back to an Aluminum S12. I’m not particularly careful with any of them; I do have AppleCare but have only used it for battery issues after it drops below 80%. Never had any damage to worry about on any of them. I did lose my S6 to the bottom of a lake while swimming (3rd party band) but that was before T&L coverage.

I just don’t see the point of spending more for “prettier” tech that works identically to cheaper aluminum. If people WANT to pay more ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ that’s their business - but I have better things to spend extra money on.

This is just my experience, and I’m pretty careful with my stuff, but the updated screen on the Series 11 has been great. I’ve been using mine for nearly a year now, and there isn’t a single scratch on it. I’ve even checked it under bright sunlight, and I can’t see any.

I went with the Jet Black aluminium last year because it looked very similar to the Slate stainless steel case I was replacing, which had that nice shiny finish. I couldn’t really justify paying nearly double for the titanium, so I thought I’d give the aluminium a go. I also bought AppleCare+ for some extra peace of mind.

One thing to keep in mind this year, though, is that all the aluminium cases are matte, so they look quite different from the titanium. That might be worth considering, especially depending on what bands you already have in your collection. The aluminium is also noticeably lighter, if that’s something you prefer.

According to Apple:

“Ceramic Shield 2 on Apple Watch Series 12 (aluminum case) is 60 percent tougher than the Ion-X glass on Apple Watch Series 11.”

“Apple Watch Series 11 with Ion-X glass has a ceramic coating that provides 2x more scratch resistance than Series 10 with Ion-X glass.”

So the Series 12 is even better!

Not sure which country you are in, but at least in Thailand, the difference is not as much as you say. Aluminium with cellular is 22900 THB and Titanium is 27900 THB, cheapest straps for both.
