For GSM and EDGE, the status has not changed. iPhone's EDGE bands will work on T-Mobile.

GSM, GPRS, EDGE:
iPhone 3G Supports the 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz GSM, GPRS, and EDGE Bands
T-Mobile Runs on the 850, 1900 MHz GSM, GPRS, and EDGE Bands. That is unchanged!

3G:
iPhone 3G supports the 850, 1900, 2100 MHz 3G Bands
T-Mobile runs on the 1700, 2100 MHz 3G Bands. 3G IS POSSIBLE ON T-MOBILE!!

T-Mobile USA is on 1700...

Don't think so. If you don't believe the technical reason below, then consider that the iPhone isn't the only 3G phone people are trying to make work on T-Mobile's 3G network, and AFAIK, nobody's succeeded.

this post
Only one T-Mobile USA frequency is supported by the iPhone 3G.

On T-Mobile's USA network, the 1700 MHz part is used for the uplink while the 2100 MHz part of the spectrum is used for the downlink (network to mobile).
Since the iPhone does not support the 1700 band, it will still not work with T-Mobile.

If I understand that poster's necro correctly, they are pointing out the following correct (but somewhat less useful) piece of information: if you unlock a 3G iPhone, it will work on T-Mobile USA's EDGE network -- that is, you can use it, but not at 3G speeds.

It's not completely useless... with a software unlock imminent, and were iPhone 3G's available on the used market at reasonable prices, the iPhone 3G does still have advantages over the iPhone EDGE in terms of... GPU speed, battery life, and GPS.

Uh, no. T-Mobile's 3G implementation requires 1700 AND 2100 MHz. One of them is used for upload, one of them is used for download. Without both, no 3G. In contrast, AT&T's 3G network runs on 850 MHz in some areas, and 1900 MHz in some areas, and both in some areas. But both frequencies are not required, as upload and download both use the same frequency. Therefore, you can get by with a phone that has either or, if you happen to live in an area that uses that frequency, but for best service, it's a good idea to have a phone that supports both.

The 3G iPhone will not work on T-Mobile. Period.

As mkrishnan and others have mentioned, the iPhone 3G will work fine on T-Mobile's EDGE network. The iPhone 3G will not be able to use T-Mobile's 3G network. So you'll get data, it'll just be slow like the original iPhone.

Whoops, my bad. That's what I meant.
