So I want to switch carriers and recently payed my phone off. So I requested to unlock my phone, so they gave me instructions that involved resetting my phone and inserting a blank sim?

Do I have to do this before I take my phone to the new carrier or can they do it? I don't even have a blank sim anymore (assuming the one that came with my iphone with i bought it?)

    You don't need to restore.

    Just insert a new SIM.

You can test this. Go to a store for your new carrier and ask one of the reps there if you can test their SIM in your phone.

If you get service, it's unlocked.

There is no 'finishing out the process'. Once they unlock it, it's unlocked.

Any instructions to restore haven't been applicable since 2011.

Just put a new SIM in and if they have truly unlocked it you're good.

Thanks for confirming, its just the email Tmo sent me makes it sound like I still "have to" do a bit on my end.

They tell you to do that last bit but it's not needed. You really just use another sim to verify it actually is unlocked. Which phone is it and which carrier? The newer iPhones sold by T-Mobile will have limited functionality on Verizon/Sprint.
