Ordered 2.6/512.

I wanted the extra space for a Win7 dual boot for games in case the SimCity port is poor.
I also take lots of photos with my DSLR and have a growing music library. When encoding at 256kbps or higher, the average album now takes .1 gigs.

Lastly, I don't have any external drives yet, but I guess I'll have to get a NAS now that there is no ODD.

Swapped my ultimate 13 air for a base 8/516, at the time convincing myself 8 was fine since i bought an air previously which was maxed at 8. Also it was in stock and I like the insant gratification of impulse shopping... :)

I'm likely returning it as I've since placed an order for 16/512. No need now for either 16 or 512 but I've convinced myself that my needs may change over the life of the computer so might as well fork over the extra 200 now instead of being forced to prematurely replace the computer as I can't upgrade it later.

I don't care if I get down voted for this but buying the 768gb is just plain retarded. People that bought that configuration should really be ashamed of themselves and learn what the value of money is.

The 768gb cost a whopping $1100 more than the 256gb and you get nothing in return except an extra 512gb. For that money I'd rather buy the ipad3, iphone or android phone and the retina macbook 256gb. 512gb is debatable but 768gb for $1100 is just the dumbest thing ever. Furthermore with all the problems going on in the world and poverty and stuff how can you justify that? Seriously need to relearn what the value of money is. But thats just capitalism, materialism and consumerism right there.

I'd agree that 768GB is a waste of money but from your argument, it sounds like an iPad3/smart phone is ok but extra storage on a computer isn't? How can you justify an iPad or smart phone or a high end laptop computer at all with all the problems going on in the world?

pot meet kettle?

I am just giving examples of things that offer far more value for the money than just some stupid silicon that is going to give you 512gb of extra space. Big whoop. Rather give some 11 homeless guys $100 and they will thank me for the rest of my life and I can build an army of homeless guys that will do anything that I want.

Most of my work is on external drives anyway... and with the advent of several Thunderbolt ports and USB 3.0, it just makes it an even more viable option. So the default storage was fine for me.

I just got the base + a 1TB external USB3 drive. 512 wouldn't have been enough, either, so I just saved myself some money.

Since there was extra room on the board, I soldered a couple more 768GB Flash chips on there. Needed the extra storage my Word docs.

Now wouldn't that be nice? With a classic MBP, you could throw two 960GB Electra SSDs in there and have over twice the storage of the Max available retina config, plus RAID speed.

I believe this Flash is soldered and not a swappable blade chip, but I may be wrong.

It isn't soldered but it is custom.

256gb is fine for me. i don't store any media locally. all of my music is already on google music.

256. It was the only one in store so I figured I'd give it a try. I originally planned on getting the 512 but turns out 256 is more than enough.

80gb w7 partition. Throw all media and games on a external. Rest for osx and programs.

The 600 dollar difference just isn't worth it. If the higher end came with a gpu bump, 16gb ram or something I could justify it. But a .3 gh bump a 250 gb for 600? No thanks

512GB, because geebees.

I needed more than 256 as I dual boot Windows for gaming. I partitioned 200GB for W7U and it's already half full with just a few games on it so 256 would have been... insufficient.

768 is really expensive for just a 256 additional geebees, so I skipped that. Plus I'd still be waiting for mine if I chose that option (where's that guy who claimed to have two 768 models before anyone else but refused to post screenshots gone?) .

Would have gone with a 2.3/512 if it were possible but this is Apple :p If you paid the $600 difference just for the additional 300MHz, you're not a very smart person.

Not complicated enough. I bought the 2.6/16/768 because 512Gb isn't enough room to get everything on, but I didn't think the extra 100MHz was worth the cash. And I don't know any Mac nerds who would laugh at me not having the "ultimate" version. I have the "ultimate without wasting money" option... :)

Hmm Im sortave the opposite in mind, I got zeroed in in the 3820qm after I saw the early mbp benchmark leaks reaching 14k+. I want the best IB. This is the best Intel can do at 45watts for laptops.

Since my last 2009 mbp I just got used to 500 gb. But I cannot see the point of 768gb for an extra 500$. In fact, if I even found an in store ultimate deal I could buy today, I would not purchase it. That extra 256 is overpriced, and frankly not near enough space. I have many TB of backed up data, im used to external HDs, in fact even prefer catagorizing my data this way.

16 Gb is just a saftey net, I doubt 16 will be needed in the next 3-4 years but Its better safe than sorry.

So I bought the 2.7/16/512.

Or you can give $2000 to a favorite charity and forego the computer completely :)

Or give $2000 to a favorite charity and buy a computer as well.

Lots of people spend lots of money on wasteful things like expensive houses, expensive cars, expensive toys, etc.

I prefer to splurge on some things, give plenty of money to charity and cut costs where I see fit.

I guess I'm retarded and have no idea of the value of money. Oh wait, my MacbookPro is what earns me my money. Go back to school kid, and when you grow up, get a job, maybe you'll learn what the value of money is.

I opted for the 256GB model because the price apple is charging for the 512gb model is outrageously expensive and I can easily live within the 256gb now and the near future. If space gets a bit tight, I can and will move files/folders on yo my NAS.

Yep. I think its dumb to spend $1100 on just 512gb of extra space. I laugh at you for buying the 768gb version. It ain't worth it and 99% of the people on earth will agree with me. I'd rather get a MBA and a rMBP than a 768gb rMBP. I'd rather get an ipad, iphone and a rMBP than a 768gb rMBP. With that $1100 you can do a lot more greater things. There are literally a gazillion of combinations of things you can do with that kind of money.

I will say it again: I think its dumb, I think you made a huge mistake and I think you don't know even how much you can actually do with $1100 except buying an extra 512gb of overpriced storage. Please don't try to justify it, its just dumb. Just acknowledge that.

I acknowledge that you think it's dumb because you can't imagine anyone using their computer for purposes that are different from yourself. I think you need to acknowledge that $1100 for 3 times as much on-board SSD storage is very much worthwhile value for money for some people.

If I don't have that much storage I will have to carry an external drive. My projects can run to several hundred GB (video, audio, photos). Apart from the inconvenience of carrying an external drive, it would cost almost as much to carry an external SSD with a decent connection (such as Thunderbolt) anyway.

Thank you for your concerned advice. I haven't ordered the rMBP yet, but when I do it will most likely be a 768GB model. Despite your opinion that there are a gazillion better things I could do with $1100, I can't think of any. Having a decent amount of SSD storage would make an amazing difference to my workflow. Maybe you don't need it, I do. You really don't need to call me dumb.

Cheers.

hahahahha. That's hilarious. I didn't buy the 768 but I sense a whole lot of jealousy in you.

You'd rather get an iPad/iPhone and an rMBP for the price of a 768GB rMBP? Chances are, if they can afford a $4000 MacBook, they already have the other products you mention. And enough money to do/buy the gazillion other things you think you can do with $1100.

Also- before you tell people to donate that $1100 to charity- if they don't donate to charity anyways, they're not going to donate the money even if they saved $1100 on their laptop.

I had 240 in my old one and about had 50-60 gigs left free consistently, so I decided to go for the 512 this time to not have to worry about space for a while.
