Hmm... has anyone bothered to mention that certain iPods play video? I agree, some wear is to be expected, as with most things. However, if the screen gets scratched up enough, won't that be a hindrance to watching videos? I'm not complaining, I fully expect my 30GB video iPod to scratch up and show signs of wear quickly, and I can handle that. Just thought I'd point out that part of the issue.

Unfortuantely I'm not. It started to load off the drive. It showed it in the option-key menu. I just got the prohibit sign when OS X started to load. May it make a difference that I have an add on USB 2.0 card? I'll post pics if you like.

I'm sure it looked for drives when you help the option key. But booting from USB is not supported by current macs. However, if you want to go into OpenFirmware and try to get it working, by all means have a look at this handy tutorial posted by Apple. I'd love to be able to do more with the 5G iPod.

I was one of the people being critical about the iPod nano scratching in an earlier thread. I dont own an iPod, and I stand by my argument that if Siemens/Nokia/Sony Ericsson can make displays which are able to withstand scratching from normal use - so should Apple.

BUT: Ive seen alot of iPods lately, and I can say this for a fact: The iPod nano DOES NOT scratch more easily than the iPod does. They are both vulnerable to hairscratches, but I believe this is due to the fact that they use polycarbonate on the entire front. While polycarbonate is a very strong material, it is also soft. In fact, my Apple keyboard has the same type of hairscratching on it - and its casing is probably made from the same material.

To recap: There is no difference in the scratchyness of the iPod line. I guess this whole thing became an issue when Apple decided to introduce black nanos, which presumably shows the scratches more easily.

That is exactly what I "was" worried about! got a 60gb 5g and watch alot of tv-shows on it while travelling!
got a shield now, but only because so many people warned me about the scratching!

I am really happy that people where "whining" about it, so got mine protected!

The iPod should not scratch that easy, it is a simple fact! if you use it only for music, ok... you can live with it but as soon as you want to watch a show on a scratched screen, you really have a problem!!

thank god for the "whining"!!

I went to a local store the other day and they had the ipod nano and 5g on display on a nice metal shelf. They'd been on display for a while because i'd seen them before.

I was amazed to see how many scratchs it had developed in the last 2 weeks... basically... nothing worth writing home about. Unless they changed them that day the two black nano's looked good as did the black 5G.

People were handling them, kids were handling them, dropping them on the shelf, putting them face down and sliding them to the edge to pick them up.

I know there were hairline scratchs on them, my ipod has them too... bad ones, but nothing that stops me from using it and nothing on the display ipods stopped me from using them or made me think "god that's an awful scratch".

The displays on my two Nokia phones are just as scratched as my iPod nano.

If you're not going to be happy when you're using your iPod, then you may as well not have one. And if you're gonna make that big of a deal about a screen, buy a Shuffle.

my damn Shuffle isn't scratch proof... and i believed you. :p

As with most things YMMV. On the day I bought my 30GB, I took a look at the iPods on display in the Regent Street Applestore in London. I had heard rumours that Apple replaced the display stock regularly to keep them looking pristine, so was not expecting much - however..... There was a black nano which looked scuffed and had plenty of hairline scratches. You could no longer read the text just to the side of the cover art. It looked as if there was a drop of water on the screen blurring what was underneath. If you turned off the nano, it did not look too bad, just like some wear and tear you would expect. There was also a white 5G, which while not quite that bad, was well on the way. The iPods are attached to security devices which means you cannot throw them along tables, kick them over the floor etc.

Did not stop me buying mine, but it stayed in its wrapper until I got a zCover for it.

I'm glad that we are just pulling **** out of our asses now. As some who has owned a 2G, 3g, Mini, and Nano, I can tell you that the Nano scratches easiest out of the bunch. After only a month, my nano has scratches which you would expect only after a years worth of use. And thats without caring it in my pocket with keys and coins etc, which everyone with a scratched iPod apparently does.
