In my experience:

There is lag even in OS X 10.8 (12A256).
- In Safari, FB lags while scrolling even worst than TheVerge site. Actually it is pretty terrible.

Facebook lags, no doubt. No, it's not worse than The Verge.

- In Safari, lags scrolling through open windows
- System, lags while bring it back from sleep, keyboard is less responsive.
- Scrolling through desktop windows is actually worst than on old MBP under Lion which was not perfect to begin with.

Nope, nope and nope.

No lag in Safari apart from Facebook, scrolling through Spaces is just as smooth as it was in my MacBook Air and iMac, and I am having no issues with coming out of sleep mode.

Not doubting you, just telling you how it is for me. You might want to try a complete wipe and reinstall.

You guys are wasting your breath. I am prepared:

I used QuickTime to capture.

It is still uploading so give it a few minutes. I am uploading 1080p version.

Ah, ok. Don't use QT to capture, it makes it look slower than it is (I tried). Use a video camera to capture the screen.

I'm prepared to prove my point too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JtAMwB1P9Y

Ok I will use camera at home.

a) You have 2.6 I have 2.3 so not apples to apples.
b) Show Facebook, TheVerge dont show Apple.com which I would be shocked if it would preform badly on a new macbook.
c) I like your wallpaper, where did you get it.

The difference between the 2.3 and 2.6 is barely noticeable in benchmarks, it's certainly not going to make a difference here.

I showed Apple.com because of a request someone else had. I'll make another video in a few minutes.

As stated in the description I got the wallpaper from stuckincustoms.com . There's some really great free/non-watermarked/hi-res wallpapers there.

a) your cpu shouldn't be the bottleneck for browser scrolling. if it is, then thats just sad.

I don't know Safari very well so not sure how to get the exact view that you go scrolling through websites/history. Safari gives me a kind of angled view of previous websites but I tested and had no lag when I did that.

I went to the Verge website and I had no lag except about 60% down the page, I experienced a slight stutter at the reviews of the phones section. My work laptop (Dell/Windows 7) also has a stutter there as well.

I'm using OSX 10.7.4.

I can't show Facebook because there's a lot of personal details on there (but if someone has a fake account I can use for the purposes of a video demonstration, PM me with the details), but here's The Verge:

Same laptop obviously. I only have my iPhone which records at 30fps so it might appear to be a little jittery on the video, but it's fairly smooth when you're just scrolling down at a normal pace. The Verge has never been perfectly smooth for me in the past though tbh so take of what what you will.

Thanks for the tip.

Hope this helps you. There's some slight stuttering in the beginning when I scrolled very quickly, but I haven't seen any computer where that doesn't happen. It's perfectly usable and quite smooth when scrolling at a normal pace.

Yeah, I agree. My old computer (3 years old) struggles a bit with Facebook.

I went looking for lag because people mentioned it and they were comparing to 2011 MBPs, which I don't have.

I love my rMBP though :) Any lag is barely noticeable to me.

My newish iMac and half-year-old Alienware laptop both struggle with the craptastically coded website that is Facebook :p

It seems like this is very much like the Retina iPad that was released earlier this year.

It's fantastic that we finally have this quality of display available, but both the hardware and software just isn't there to support it yet.

On the software side, look forward to performance improvements from Apple, and apps will be updated to support retina resolutions over time, but it still isn't going to change the fact that the hardware isn't quick enough yet. And just because you can run games OK at 2880×1800 doesn't mean that rendering web pages will ever be smooth. While you might assume that games are more complicated, rendering a web page is a very different kind of task.

And as for software... non-retina software looks bad, I agree. But it often doesn't look any worse than when you compare it to a 1440×900 display, it's just that the 1440×900 display has a grid over it that hides a lot of things.

If you want a smooth experience, and don't really want/need the retina display, wait for the upgraded model next year. (though I'm sure Mountain Lion will help)
If you want the best possible display now, and are willing to make some compromises to get it, buy one today and get a full extra year out of it.

Hey all,

After reading Anandech's review - I would like to ask all of you who are using the Retina MBP - Are you satisfied with your new system?

Having seen a coworker's... if I had the money I'd probably be very happy. :) One day... but I typically do upgrades every 3~4 years. The MBP circa 2014, with the latest Intel processor, should be very nice indeed. :D

Does anyone here use an external display with their rMBP.

I would like to use one, but at the same time, I feel that if I do use an external display, I am not using my new computer to its full potential.

How does everyone else use a multi screen setup with the new rMPB?

You mean like this: (did w/ the regular Control-Shift-4. Also, I have no prob w/ desktop sharing. Something is wrong with how you setup your machine. Don't blame the RMBP. It works fine.)

oh please give me some benefits of doubts i posted like 20 at length posts on here about these problems common to everyone w/ examples.

When I said screen shot doesn't work, I mean when you paste it into Photoshop or Keynote or Page or Word or Outlook 2011 or Powerpoint. The whole thing will look 4x bigger. Then you have to resize it before you send to people.

When I said desktop sharing doesn't work, well it works if I am sharing entire desktop on WebEx, but it won't work if I only share ONE application.

How can I give you the benefit of the doubt when you don't write what you mean? You said screen shot did not work. Screen shot works fine. You now say what you meant was that a vast number mainline applications are not retina-ready and there are visual discrepancies. Fair enough, but that isn't what you wrote originally. Write what you mean. We are not mind readers.

I've had my rMBP for about a week now. This is my first Mac by the way.

I am absolutely amazed at the clarity this screen and resolution provides. That said, I've got to say that the screen lag when using Safari is slightly annoying. I'm not too worried about it as I have heard from countless people that Mountain Lion will mostly solve the issue. I've also heard from several people running Google Chrome Canary, that everything looks great with no lag or stuttering. I'm not a big fan of running Beta software, so I will wait a few months for Google to officially release a retina ready version of Chrome, and will then switch over to that. For the time being, I'm making do with Safari.

I think the hardware is just a little ahead of the software at this point. I look forward to the software catching up over the next 6-12 months.

I can say without a doubt that this is by far the most impressive "Retina" experience Apple offers. I own a 4S, and I have used the new iPad extensively, and neither provide the same experience the Retina Macbook Pro does, simply amazing.

These poll results are real interesting...Wonder why they're so much different then all of the posts that have been made.

Because the people that are generally happy won't get mad and post about issues they aren't having :)

So you will hear a lot more from those that aren't happy than those that are.

Had mine for a week or so?

Lion was not good, there was quite a bit of lag in safari...

I am running ML now and it is 99% gone, lag that is

I still get a little lag sometimes when I do the exposé swipe

I hope apple smooths it out, cause that is one reason I go apple, I love the smoothness.

Everything else is awesome, great machine. Love the new slimmer design.

oh ya, and of course the screen is amazing, other screens look like crap now

----------

Both of my macs struggle with Facebook to :p

yes, FB sucks everywhere, safari, chrome, iphone, etc

I am amazed at how the #1 social network site can be so poor

Another good test to see the lag. Create 6 desktops. Put Safari on 1 and put something like spotify on 6. Now go to 1 (Safari) and click on the spotify icon in the dock.

I'm loving my Retina. I've only had it one day and it consisted of loading needed software and app store browsing. I was able to get my hands on Aperture and update to 3.3. The screen is absolutely beautiful. I have a hyperx SSD in my mid 2010 Mini and this thing blows it away. Encoded a full length movie last night in 15 minutes.
