That flower pic is very good! There's even a nice bokeh in the background (all things considered). Cool!

I'm impressed by the camera (though my old nexus one had a poor camera)
Here is the first photo I actually took with my phone of my cat:

It's a hair below a good point and shoot. One more generation and it should be great. it's passable in a pinch outdoors now, but I wouldn't give up carrying a real camera.

I have a 400.00 Canon and the 4S takes just pictures just as good in my opinion. Passable? Do you even own a 4S? You are the only person i have ever heard say this, so I doubt it.

No reason to carry a dedicated camera now. The camera on the 4S is more than passable. No reason at all. And remember the best camera is the one you have with you. Even on vacation I will not be taking a standalone not with the 4S camera. Shoot, edit, upload all at the same time.

Just tap on the part of the image you want to be in focus before you take the picture.

More than that, you can take some really advanced shots by holding down on an area until it says "AE/AF Lock" at the bottom. You can prep your shot by focusing on an object the right distance away then keep shooting anywhere with the same AE/AF settings.

you're lucky...my camera is working terribly :(

Taken with flash in my house....

I know this sounds silly...but I had this problem for the longest time, I thought my phone was borked. Turns out a few minutes with a clean microfiber cloth and some cleaning foam from Zagg was all it needed. The lens was blurry.

great pic!

my gf is having trouble getting good pics with her 4s, and i keep telling her it can take great pics because i keep seeing them here.

they look sorta fuzzy like a picture taken from a camera phone, unlike posted pics like this one which do not look like it was taken by a phone

but she really hasnt tried taking any outdoors yet so could it just be a low light/artificial light issue?

I took this shot of my dog, close up in low light (single shaded lamp in a dark room). Not too bad, some noticeable quality reduction but still better than the 4.

Bokeh is the dogs :D

I wouldn't call that bokeh nice....but perhaps all things being considered meaning it's a cell phone camera, perhaps. Overall though, the bokeh is quite poor. Here's an illustration showing from poor to ideal (creamy) bokeh. The 4s is even worse than the bad shown here too. It produces hollow blur points. Glazed Donuts really.

Don't get me wrong, I love my 4s and I'll use the hell out of the camera, especially over what I did with my 3Gs, but in situations where there's 4s Bokeh, I'll have to post process it to be satisfied. Easy enough but still.

That's some serious critique of what is and always will be a cell phone camera. You want creamy bokeh? Buy a DSLR and a nice lens.

The OP's pic is stunning considering it came from a 4S. Better than many point and shoot POS I've seen as of late.

I know and thus why I agreed with the comments about all things considered. I just am a stickler on insuring that folks don't go around believing that is an example of great bokeh or even good bokeh as that could be embarrassing for them.

I run my own photography studio specializing in event photography so I ahve plenty of time behind SLR's. However, I can post a sample from an $90 Panasonic using a Leica designed lens that will blow you away. Just the same a nearly 11 year old Sony that has a Carl Zeiss inspired design that is even better.

Again, not crapping on it, but being honest and real. It has the ability to create DOF but not great quality. Apple also needs to revisit the metering. It tends to blow highlights pretty easily.
