I personally have never gotten it but apparently I'm in the minority. Maybe I'll be kicking myself in April when my warranty runs out...

Not really kicking yourself, you'll just be coming on here asking a ton of questions about how to fix your mac for free as you have no warranty left and do you think Apple will make an exception for a certain error/ issue, like tons of other threads already on here!!

LOLLLL, and then to REALLY annoy people I'll start more threads asking if I should just buy a new MBP and if so, should I buy now or wait until [insert upcoming processor here]
As mentioned in a few posts before, you cannot confirm the validity of apple care just by looking at that webpage. The previous owner could have gotten applecare from e-bay and got scammed and didn't know about it until you (the second buyer) tries to make a claim on it. In my opinion, applecare will help make your machine easier to sell, but not necessary sell at a higher price.
Heck its not even my first year and apple care has replaced $1000+ worth of components for my mac.
This is horrible advice ever. Why is upgrading ram in this post? Obviously this isn't considered by AppleCare.
Do you know how hard it is to replace the screen and how expensive it is to replace?
I have AppleCare for my early 2011 15" MBP and even though I haven't used it, the piece of mind it gives me is worth the price.
^ This. Not sure I'd pay the equivalent of the price of Applecare as a premium (i.e don't buy it as an investment) but I'd certainly pick the one with AC over the one without, all else being equal.
if you buy your mac with an american express you get free extended warranty through american express, probably the same thing as apple care or better. because with apple care they will fix your mac or give you a refurbish one while american express just reimburse you the original price of the product if it would have any problem within the extended warranty period, that apple would not cover.
i got my macs and factory unlocked iPhone 4s with my american express, and pretty much all my electronic purchases everywhere else as well. never need to pay extra for extended warranty again.

Have anyone as a friend who is in school? Apparently for AppleCare it's over $100 off with the educational pricing! Just found out today from the apple store here near Miami.
Could Applecare be seen a valid investment if you do plan to keep your MBP until it expires?

Read the terms more carefully. Although I love the AMEX warranty extensions as well, it doubles the manufacturers warranty up to 1 year, so it only adds 1 year to the original warranty (so 2 years versus the 3 with AC). Also, the terms state that they will cover the terms of the original warranty, which only equates to an immediate refund when it is a lower dollar item. They have required at times that the purchaser get a written repair estimate from the manufacturer and they will decide to repair or refund/ replace.
Also Apple doesn't always replace with a refurb, they will replace with a new model if the older model is no longer available, which can be the case in store when they are handling the repair. I know as mine was too old, so Apple replaced with brand new model equivalent.
I agree though in that AC is a personal choice, just as any other warranty extension that is purchased.

Apple care only extends the warranty up to 3 years. Anything beyond 3 years is owner's expense with the exception of a product recall. Furthermore, apple will NOT issue a brand new laptop that easily.
Check the L.A. Computer Company. It consistently meets or beats Apple's education discount on AppleCare.
My personal experience:
AppleCare gives you piece of mind with your hardware. I depend on my MBP so I feel better knowing that I can get service quick if something goes bad.
Also, I take very good care of my hardware and try to keep it in pristine condition. When I have sold my MBPs over the years, having AppleCare always seemed to help when selling them. I feel the buyer knows they are getting a warranty with a used machine which makes them feel better.
Also, I have no doubts that if my machine was against a similar one but did not have Applecare, they would choose mine because of the warranty.
Just some thoughts...

I've gotten repairs under AppleCare and under AmEx for the same part. With AmEx, I called AmEx, got a claim letter emailed to me, went to the store, got an estimate, came home, faxed the claim letter, the estimate, my original AmEx bill, and my original store receipt, and the Apple warranty to AmEx. AmEx rejected the claim. I appealed the claim. After a month, they credited my AmEx bill the amount of the estimate. Lose your AmEx bill? Lose your receipt? You're SOL.
The good thing about AmEx is that it will extend your warranty even if you do purchase AppleCare. So you can get four years of coverage (3 years from Apple and a fourth from AmEx) if you buy AppleCare.
Nt debating this just wondering if you are certain on this as the AMEX terms or warranty statement reads the "original" manufacturer warranty will be doubled up to a maximum of 1 year? AC is not the "original" manufacturer warranty, but an extended warranty, so I was told it would only extend the original to 2 years and thus be doubly covered in the second year (AMEX and AC) and AMEX would only kick in when the AC would not work, but you must try with AC first and be denied before AMEX would try.
I have been told different things by different AMEX reps when I inquired (the same as other companies where the answer you get is the luck of the draw with the rep that answers it).
You'll need to read your specific card agreement, carfully.

I was able to buy one off eBay w/ the guy sending me the code immediately! Phewww.
Given the MBPs won't be ready until April/May/June, I'm glad I bought the AppleCare.
IMHO & speaking from my own experience, buying AppleCare codes through eBay is not a smart thing to do. You might want to google or search for the numerous threads on such topics here at the MR forums.
